OBERER LAND DEVELOPERS, LTD., FIVE RIVERS METROPARKS PARTNER ON WETLANDS PROJECT IN MIAMI TOWNSHIP

Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. and Five Rivers MetroParks have joined forces to create more than 17 acres of consolidated wetland mitigation area in Miami Township. The property, a 60-acre tract, owned by Five Rivers MetroParks, is located on Medlar Road. When completed, this will be the largest concentration of emergent wetlands in Five Rivers MetroParks.

Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. and Five Rivers MetroParks began discussions on the development of the Medlar Road wetland area in 2005. The two organizations have worked closely with Kilbane Environmental, Inc. to guide the design of the new wetland area. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency provided final approval on the design and granted all necessary permits by summer’s end. Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. is providing 100% of the funding costs for design, permit and construction of the wetlands.

“Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. has developed many residential communities in the area and now we are very proud to be a part of a project that will provide a home to our indigenous wildlife,” said Michael Oberer, vice president of the company. “

Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. began construction at the Medlar Road Wetland in 2006. A temporary parking lot has been installed and significant grading of the site has taken place. The project calls for a depression to be created in the soil, which will be filled with organic (plant compost) material. The soil was mixed to create a hydraulic soil and allowed to “sit” through the winter. Now, during the spring, Oberer Land Developers, Ltd. and Five Rivers MetroParks will work together on the planting of wetland-appropriate vegetation.

Five Rivers MetroParks will be allocating considerable funds to the long term monitoring and maintenance of the wetlands site. The large concentration of wetlands and long-term maintenance will help to ensure that a high quality of life, for both plants and animals, is maintained.
